After-Hours Vet Services in Collingwood
BayVETS treats pets that need prompt medical attention when your family veterinarian is closed. We are open Monday to Friday 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and weekends and statutory holidays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. During our hours, an experienced veterinarian is always on site, not on call. Walk in, call us at 289-985-0855, or book online. Outside our hours, call the 24/7 teletriage line at 647-695-5411 or go to the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital.
Our clinic is an after-hours emergency vet in Collingwood at 16 Pine Street, across from Loblaws. We see everything from serious emergencies to concerns that just can't wait. If your pet needs more advanced or critical care, we work to stabilize your pet and arrange a referral. Below is what we offer, and the limits of each service.
Urgent care consultation
A veterinarian examines your pet for problems that cannot wait for your family vet. We commonly see vomiting, diarrhea, limping, wounds, ear infections, eye problems, allergic reactions, coughing, urinary issues, toxin exposures, lameness and pain. It does not have to be a true emergency: we see any concern that can't wait, after work, on weekends and on holidays. Visitors to the region are welcome.
Emergency assessment and triage
We assess and triage every patient who walks through our door. The most urgent cases are seen first.
In-house laboratory
Bloodwork and other tests run in our own laboratory, which helps the veterinarian quickly evaluate emergency and urgent conditions.
Digital x-ray
X-rays are excellent for evaluating bones, lungs and overall abdominal structure. We often use x-rays and ultrasound together in emergency and urgent cases.
Ultrasound and FAST scans
Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive test that does not use radiation, and most pets tolerate it very well. It lets the veterinarian assess internal organs and soft tissues in real time. It can help evaluate vomiting, abdominal pain, trauma such as being hit by a car, breathing difficulty, internal bleeding, fluid build-up, bladder issues, foreign bodies and intestinal blockages.
We offer focused (FAST) scans. Comprehensive scans depend on sonographer availability. Many pets are more comfortable with light sedation, which can also give a clearer image.
Surgical services
We perform select urgent surgeries, depending on your pet's condition, the resources the treatment needs, and veterinarian availability.
Endoscopic foreign body removal
When a pet swallows something, upper GI endoscopy may be used in appropriate cases to retrieve it from the stomach without abdominal surgery. The procedure uses a specialized camera and retrieval instruments, and it is done under general anesthesia. Depending on the size, shape and location of the object, endoscopy may remove items such as socks, toys, fabric, bones, fish hooks, rawhide and other swallowed material.
X-rays and ultrasound are often used to see whether the object is still in the stomach and whether endoscopy may be possible. Because endoscopy is minimally invasive, many pets have less discomfort and a faster recovery than after abdominal surgery. Endoscopy depends on veterinarian availability.
Hospitalization
We provide care and monitoring during our operating hours. Most patients we see do not need overnight care, and many go home the same day. If your pet needs to stay overnight, we help arrange a transfer to a facility that can care for your pet overnight.
Wound and laceration care
We treat cuts, lacerations and bite wounds, and porcupine encounters.
Pain management
Pain, limping and lameness are among the concerns we commonly see. The veterinarian looks for the cause and plans care to help keep your pet comfortable.
End-of-life care
Saying good-bye to a cherished pet is hard. We provide compassionate and dignified end-of-life care, with gentle, caring hands, and we offer memorial options, including private cremation and a choice of keepsakes.
Referral coordination
If your pet needs overnight, intensive (ICU) or specialty care, we assess your pet, work to stabilize your pet and keep your pet comfortable, and help arrange a referral to the most appropriate facility that is available.
After your visit, we send a detailed medical report to your family veterinarian, so follow-up care continues.
What we do not do
BayVETS is not a general veterinary practice. We do not offer vaccines, spays, neuters, wellness exams or dentistry. We strongly recommend that every pet has a regular family veterinarian.
When we are closed
Outside our hours, call the 24/7 teletriage hotline at 647-695-5411. This is a shared 24/7 teletriage service. A registered veterinary technician screens the situation and tells you where to go: the most appropriate facility, a telemedicine consult with a veterinarian, or your regular veterinarian when it opens. If your pet ate something toxic, you can also call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435. If in doubt, always call for advice.
Payment and pet insurance
Payment is due at the time of care. For larger procedures, we give you a clear estimate first and payment is due before treatment begins. We accept major credit cards and debit cards, and payment plans through Scratchpay and Humm. See payment plans and financing. We provide detailed invoices for pet insurance claims, and we may be able to help with direct claims for some insurers.
Towns we see pets from
We welcome pets from Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Stayner, Creemore, Thornbury, Meaford, The Blue Mountains, Clearview Township, Barrie and nearby communities.
