An urgent care consultation is an examination by a veterinarian for a problem that cannot wait for your family vet. It does not have to be a true emergency. We see any concern that can't wait, after work, on weekends and on holidays, and visitors to the region are welcome.

What happens during the consultation
In general, a veterinary exam starts with vital signs, the pet's weight and a physical exam. The vet looks at the eyes, ears, mouth and teeth, watches how the pet moves, listens to the heart and lungs, and feels the abdomen, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual. How fast the gums regain colour after a press gives information about circulation.
The vet will also ask what happened and about your pet's history. It helps to know when the problem started, what your pet ate, and which medications your pet takes. If your pet swallowed something, bring the package or label.
If the vet needs more information, we can run tests in our in-house laboratory, take digital x-rays, or do an ultrasound scan. We explain the findings and the options, and we give you a clear estimate before larger procedures.
After the visit
Most patients we see do not need overnight care, and many go home the same day. After your visit, we send a detailed medical report to your family veterinarian, so follow-up care continues.
BayVETS is not a general veterinary practice. We do not offer vaccines, spays, neuters, wellness exams or dentistry. We strongly recommend that every pet has a regular family veterinarian.
