Referral coordination
BayVETS is an after-hours emergency vet in Collingwood. Call us at 289-985-0855 during our hours. Outside our hours, call the 24/7 teletriage line at 647-695-5411 or go to the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital.
If your pet needs overnight, intensive (ICU) or specialty care, we assess your pet, work to stabilize your pet and keep your pet comfortable, and help arrange a referral to the most appropriate facility that is available.
Why referral is part of our care
BayVETS is an urgent care clinic. We are equipped to perform diagnostics, hospitalize during our hours and perform select surgeries. The majority of the patients we treat do not need overnight care, and this is why we can see patients quickly and efficiently.
Some pets need more. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that critically ill animals need nursing care around the clock, and that pets with trauma usually need close monitoring in a hospital, because some injuries take up to 48 hours to show their effects.
What we do before a referral
We assess your pet and work to stabilize your pet.
We keep your pet comfortable.
We help arrange the transfer to the most appropriate facility that is available.
We explain why your pet needs the referral.
Tests that we did, such as lab tests and x-rays, can help the next team. Ask us how the records will go with your pet.
Your family vet
After your visit, we send a detailed medical report to your family veterinarian, so follow-up care continues.
When we are closed
Outside our hours, call the 24/7 teletriage hotline at 647-695-5411. This is a shared 24/7 teletriage service. A registered veterinary technician screens the situation and tells you where to go: the most appropriate facility, a telemedicine consult with a veterinarian, or your regular veterinarian when it opens. If in doubt, always call for advice.
Questions
Why can't my pet stay at BayVETS overnight?
We provide care and monitoring during our operating hours. For overnight care, we help arrange a transfer to a facility that can care for your pet overnight.
Who decides where my pet goes?
The vet recommends the most appropriate facility that is available and talks with you about it.
Do I need to drive my pet there?
Ask the team. The vet will explain how the transfer works for your pet.
